'Galena'

At an early age I became intrigued by the shells and fossils in the nearby gravel pits, deposited by the melting glaciers of the Ice Age. After obtaining a degree in Geology at Manchester University where I was able to pursue my interest in rock climbing and mountaineering, I worked briefly as a trainee geophysicist until I realised that a career and security were not priorities.
For the next fifteen years I led a transient existence, taking on a variety of labouring jobs, mostly in the construction industry, in order to finance climbing trips to mountain ranges throughout the world.Whilst living in Cardiff I developed an interest in wood carving and taught myself the techniques. After a number of years I felt the need to explore beyond the confines of traditional carving and I became more interested in contemporary art. Henry Moore's Royal Academy Exhibition of 1988 made a lasting impression on me.
1993 I moved to Powys, to an old farmhouse on the Western side of the Black Mountains. This provides me with plenty of work space and I am in close proximity to the surrounding wildlife which is a constant source of inspiration. Working on a larger scale in stone and iron as well as wood, I'am becoming increasingly interested in the interaction of sculpture and landscape.
